How a Spontaneous Day Trip in Mostar Turned Into a Profound Grief Connection

She wasn't even meant to go to Mostar. She didn't know the place existed until the day before. I planned to go but nearly skipped the full day tour because I was exhausted. Yet something (a gut feeling, a hostel owner's pitch at 10pm) got us both there.

In between sightseeing, she mentioned her dad had died. I said, "Me too." Connection is the reward for vulnerability. The rest of the day was beautiful, sad, tearful, and happy all at once. We talked about everything weighing on our hearts in stunning locations. We had only one day together, but we felt so seen, and a little less alone.

We were both traveling solo, not quite sure what we were looking for, but the universe gave us exactly what we needed.

If you're grieving and open to travel, a grief trip might bring you the exact connection you didn't know you needed, sometimes from a stranger on a spontaneous day trip, sometimes from a small group of people who already understand.
