Portugal Grief Retreat
Porto holds grief gently. Fado, Portugal's soulful music born from longing and loss, drifts out of doorways. The Douro river moves slowly through wine country that has seen centuries of hellos and goodbyes. For seven days, you'll share this place on a small-group grief retreat with people who understand loss, moving between grief workshops, tile painting, river cruises and unhurried afternoons.
Why Portugal, when you're grieving
Portugal was the very first Grief Trip destination, and it remains the one people describe as feeling like a deep exhale. The rhythm is unhurried: mornings in Porto's markets, grief workshops when the group is ready for them, evenings when nobody has to explain why they're quiet.
The trip splits its time between the city and the Douro Valley, a UNESCO wine region where the river does some of the holding. There is grief yoga beside the water, a sharing circle in the vineyards, wild swimming for those who want it, and a closing ceremony to mark what the week held.
A grief retreat in Portugal is also one of the easiest to reach. Porto is a short, direct flight from most of Europe and well connected from further afield, and the whole week is walkable, gentle and unhurried. You never have to organise a thing beyond arriving: everything, from the vineyard sharing circle to the closing ceremony, is held for you.
Day by day
Everything on the itinerary is optional: go as gently or as deeply as feels right.
