A grief retreat in Portugal

2 spots left Porto Max 10 participants

Porto holds grief gently. Fado, Portugal's soulful music born from longing and loss, drifts out of doorways. The Douro river moves slowly through wine country that has seen centuries of hellos and goodbyes. For seven days, you'll share this place on a small-group grief retreat with people who understand loss, moving between grief workshops, tile painting, river cruises and unhurried afternoons.

Why Portugal, when you're grieving

Portugal was the very first Grief Trip destination, and it remains the one people describe as feeling like a deep exhale. The rhythm is unhurried: mornings in Porto's markets, grief workshops when the group is ready for them, evenings when nobody has to explain why they're quiet.

The trip splits its time between the city and the Douro Valley, a UNESCO wine region where the river does some of the holding. There is grief yoga beside the water, a sharing circle in the vineyards, wild swimming for those who want it, and a closing ceremony to mark what the week held.

Day by day

Everything on the itinerary is optional: go as gently or as deeply as feels right.

Day 1
Make your way from the airport to Bolhão by metro (€2.25). Check in at 4pm and settle into your home for the first few nights in central Porto. That evening, come together for a Welcome Dinner at 7:30pm - your first chance to meet the group.
Day 2
Start the morning with a food tour through the city, exploring Ribeira and the iconic São Bento station. In the afternoon, try your hand at traditional tile painting before settling into a reflection and intentions session - a gentle opening to the grief work ahead.
Day 3
Head across the river to the Gaia port wine cellars to learn about the history and craft of port wine production. Explore the origins of Fado, Portugal's soulful music born from longing and loss. End the day at a secret sunset spot.
Day 4
Board a 2-hour train into one of the world's most beautiful wine regions. Check into your Pool Villa, just minutes from the Douro River in Peso da Régua. Wind down with sunset yoga and a journaling session as the valley settles around you.
Day 5
A full day in Pinhão. Take a traditional Rabelo boat along the Douro River, visit a vineyard, and go deeper with the Know Your Emotions workshop and a sharing circle. End the day with grief yoga.
Day 6
Hike the hills around Régua before a wild swimming break in the river. Two workshops today: Meaning in Life after Loss, followed by a closing ceremony to mark the end of the retreat together.
Day 7
A leisurely Farewell Brunch at 11am, checkout, then the train back to Porto at 3pm. Carry everything home with you.
